It'll have been four months tomorrow since I last posted. I have been working on stuff! Just been busy with work-work (and also just very lazy with scanning/uploading anything). Well, here's to more frequent posts!

Some animated gifs, these two are about 2 or 3 months old at this point.

And here's one I did last night; started cleaning up and realized I was a bit too loose with keeping proportions/forms consistent sizes. Lots of fun though, was primarily a test for animating a character with those sort of proportions.

The new blogger set up is interesting, some pretty cool options. Yes though, be back with more soon!

Quick update, painted this for about 15 minutes before getting in bed last night. This little guy sits on my desk in front of my monitor, was a bit tough getting his colors in the light; I think he's a bit too blue/greenish in spots but I like em.

Speed is a relative term, of course; between 30 min - 1 hour I'd say. Both from reference, the environment was tough due to the large amount of detail and the ellipse(s) on the second was pretty tough to freehand as well. Good practice either way... I'm learning, slowly but surely!

Modelsheet Studies

Been trying to do at least daily studies of this character as a suggestion off of Rad's How-to blog (been a big fan of his for a while, learned a bunch from his blog as well). He suggested drawing a simpler character like this for a month to really get used to how the construction works before moving onto more complicated designs. Learning a lot from the studies, I think it's helping my personal drawings gain a bit more solidity (little by little at least).

Sorry for the scan quality, my sketchbook is 9" x 12" and my scanner is 8" x 12", so it doesn't quite scan completely clean.

Back again with a PS painting of a wine bottle from reference. Realized a few steps in that the drawing was off (measured one way and not another) , but I wanted to practice my rendering so I just kept at it. Fun practice, about 1 - 1.5 hours.

While I'm getting things scanned in, here's a quick study I did today from the artist Earl Oliver Hurst, this great illustrator from the 50s. Love his body shapes and the way he draws ladies; ended up drawing a hand from one of his drawings as well as an attempt at this lovely drawing. I drew it pretty quick and I notice a good number of flaws (face is too large among others), will probably take another stab at it at a slower pace when I can.

Also, I found that artist on Today's Inspiration, a blog that goes over a large number of illustrators from the 40's and 50's. Really good study and inspiration material!

PS Sketch dump

Sooo, that whole frequent update thingy I said at some point previously? Well, let's just say that I'm going to be trying harder to keep that up from now on!

I have been doing art things! Mostly just sketches and the like, but I have realized that I tend to progress the most when I'm constantly drawing. At some point I stopped carrying a sketchbook on me in the last few years and I feel like around then is when I plateaued. I used to be a gesture and sketchbook fool, just trying to draw wherever and whomever I could; and, ideally, I can get back there. BUT ENOUGH OF ALL THAT.

FIRST UP, a study of a laundry detergent bottle and an environment sketch. After these I decided to move back to gray scale studies/doodles for a bit to work a bit more on my values. Stopped a bit early on in the study, started to move to the next level of rendering and then thought the better of it.

So, sometime between the above sketches and the ones below I went to the MIT ~~Robot~~ Museum in Cambridge, MA. And while my robot designs are not like the actual robots they have there (and they have some pretty amazing robots might I add) , I had a fun time with em.

Pretty simple shapes, but I figured it's good practice in rendering forms and also in painting in PS in general. I started to try pushing the value scale a bit more in these next ones; still need alot of practice with it but I think they are working pretty well at the moment. The bottom one (little floating guy with the eye-ball (HA)) was probably the most finished PS thing I've done in a while, definitely had a good time with him. The rendering came out a bit softer than I'd have liked but I'm happy overall.

And last but not quite least, this weird looking dude happened at some point. Mostly just playing with shape and then trying to identify form with this one. Not sure why he's got such an intense look going though, or why he's saying NO (though it also sort of looks like NJ).

Alrighty though, I'll be back shortly with more things! Got a bunch of things to scan, just being laaazy (plus I recently started doing some freelance work once again). Also, not sure if I've mentioned him on here before but I highly recommend taking a look at the work of Rob Laro. Huge fan of his style and his modeling/texturing work, definitely a huge inspiration.

Angry large forehead, Helicopter knife fight

Got a couple of things to share, both done in Photoshop.

This one just sorta started off as a doodle then just slowly turned into this unhappy looking guy. Mostly was just messing with blending a little bit, as well as shape/form; had fun warming up on it, both for my hand and for getting used to drawing in photoshop.

Aaaaand this one was based a random sentence given to me by the lady Katelyn: "A helicopter in a knife fight with a sombrero eating a turkey leg." I didn't manage to fit the turkey leg into it and I'm not too happy with the sombrero so much, but I had fun with it overall; the helicopter was definitely fun. Also, Katelyn gave me that AMAZING pun, which definitely makes it better

Been trying to get back into using Photoshop for drawing/painting more lately; used to do it alot and I fell out of the groove pretty badly. Got time off for the next few weeks, though, so I'm gonna try my best to rock it out.

Back with some sketches, a drawing done in flash, and the walk cycle I came up with for that robot.

I tend to forget alot of times that doing some quick sketches from reference is a really good way to get the gears going. I haven't sketched in photoshop (or in a raster/pixel based program for that matter) for a little while up to this point, so these were helpful for getting my hand to steady on the tablet a bit more. The judo throw is from reference, though everything else came after and was from imagination.

This was mostly practice in process; I did a rough sketch, laid in the structure, then started blocking in colors and adding details. As I worked though I quickly began to dislike my color choices, pose, and proportions, so I just wrapped it up so I could move on. It is a full body shot but I feel that this is the only area that came out well. EDIT: Forgot to mention this was done in Flash.

And last but not least, here's an attempted walk cycle for the robot. I was really stubborn about how his feet should move (no bend in the feet themselves) hoping it would add to the character. Unfortunately I went with a more standard walk so it ended up not coming out exactly as I wanted (if I were to go back and do it again I'd make it more stompy I think). Once I finished the legs I just laid in basic motion for the rest of the body, figure I can mess with the timing and spacing later on should I feel like it. Fun practice working with symbols either way.

So 4 months almost to the day, eh? Been a looooong time; I am back with something though! Been quite a varied 4 months, got my first taste of some freelance work among other things. I learned quite alot and I've been trying to apply those things I learned to my personal work. I HAVE been doing personal art the last 4 months (observational and sketchbook work as usual, as well as working my way through Preston Blair bit by bit) I've just been quite lazy on scanning (plus I figure gestures and studies get boring to look at... not that that doesn't mean I shouldn't dump em all on here every once in a while). ALL GONNA CHANGE THOUGH, got some sketchbook drawings as well as two things I've done in Flash.

Now, assuming you aren't reading this in an RSS reader, you've likely noticed the new BG and banner. I don't have a blue shirt with a fist on it, that grey-brown of pants, nor am I that round in face or smug in expression (and I'm almost positive that sort of swirl in the BG has been done many, many times), but I was pretty happy with it. I'll post up the image by itself shortly.

ENOUGH TALK, TO THE WORK..!

This little grey guy with the glowy eyes is a robot I made in Flash. The thing with him, however, is that he is made up of symbols within Flash and I plan to animate him sooon. Figure it's good practice animating with symbols and it'll be nice seeing what I can do with em.

And the BG image. I kinda like the fast render version in Flash, might export that and put it up later.

This first one was part of an illustration I was trying to do a couple months ago and didn't keep up with pretty quickly on. I blocked out the main shapes but only did some actual rendering on the hands. I like the way they came out, though it's not necessarily the direction I really wanna try for at this point.

And this next one is just a quick self portrait sketch I did; was only about 30 minutes up to this point I think. I tightened it up a bit more after this but I didn't like the way it was going. The drawing doesn't look so much like me (I kinda look like I'm looking up and I think I exaggerated my jaw a bit), but I like the line in this.

Just some small things I've done here and there (all the little animations were from today) in flash recently. I'm sure I've said it before but I've improved so much from working with other people, specifically 3 or 4 people I've seen a bunch more in the past months. I won't mention names (THIS TIME) but I just wanted to say thanks as always!

All the animations below were done straight ahead, which kinda explains some of the screw ups (no real bounce and the pelvis sinks in the walk, the legs don't perform the same way in the leg jump thing that stick out to me). Also gifs don't seem to support animation done on 1s; really only effects the ball with the green legs this time, but annoying nonetheless. Ahh well, can't really complain in the end.

Hey, looks like it's been a month or so hasn't it? Oops, not sure what happened in March; I've been doing alot of studies and those are rather boring so I won't upload those (haven't scanned em so that doesn't help). I have been starting some things though, got a couple works in progress and hopefully some good things on the horizon.

This blog is officially over a year old too! Weird ya know?

Here's a quick animation I did over the last couple days. Been itching to animate a gun shot with a big puff of smoke (not sure why from a small pistol but hey), so here's an attempt. The fall at the end could be better, but I'm liking it's going so far.

My scanner's been kinda picky lately (probably my fault) so I haven't been able to scan any recent sketches. Here is a small collection of gestures: half imagined, half from observation (the bottom 4 being imagined). Nothing too exciting but enjoyable nonetheless. A great learning site I came across recently is http://theartcenter.blogspot.com/ , which is a collection of artists contributing personal tutorials and such. Really helpful things, was thinking of this tutorial by Brian Wong in particular. Also check out http://www.radfordsechrist.blogspot.com/ , his stuff has been hugely inspiring to me as of late.

Here's some sketches of recent, mostly done while I'm on break at work. Love/hate relationship with them (as I'm sure most people have with their work), parts I like and parts I know could be better. Excuse the random quotes on there (ie boom kaka boom), was listening to A Tribe Called Quest while sketching.

And the next one is a quick self portrait and some more sketches on newsprint. Love working on newsprint because I think subconsciously I know I don't have to make it look that great since the paper isn't of the best quality (no slight to newsprint of course). Also my nose is a bit flat in that sp and it doesn't really look like me.

I'm only showing the PS and flash ones because I figure they are more or less the same sorta thing... and this way I don't have to make the effort to scan the page in :P Also a random background in flash, with and without blue line... probably animate something simple over it if i can. Lots of inspiration/studying of Jake Parker's work, specifically his Inktober works. Sorry if the image sizes are too big as well.

I've been making a point to do more anatomy studies n such this year (lots of Hogarth lately) but I figure those aren't the greatest posting material. So here's a bunch of sketches I've done lately, usually between pages of abdomens/pelvises or when I'm on break at work. I need to get more finished work done... maybe some work with a bit more personal meaning to it too? We'll certainly see!

First up is just a doodle I did in flash; still messing with line weight to a degree in it, but nothing too crazy. Sorry if the image is a bit large as well.

And at the insistence of one Mark Mullaney, I did some fan art of the great Sara King's Kevin and Hops (yay in-text links). Wanted to do some sprites so this is probably something of a WIP; might mash them together into a start screen image or something.

Here are some of the sketches I did from the Drink and Draw; the top image is pieced together incorrectly (need to remember to get a sketchbook that fits my scanner correctly next time I get one) but it's not too bad. Otherwise the ones show here are more my favorites; pretty much all observational stuff, but it was fun regardless.

And some studies of rhinos. Figured since I did the boxing rhino a little bit ago I should keep with them as a subject hehe. These were done in Flash; good practice sketching digitally as well as with line weight using flash's brush (to a degree at least). The two marked with asterisks are from reference (man I've been spelling asterisk wrong for a while).

Hello, finally posting this month; been kinda crazy figuring out some life things, but I have started to draw more! Hopefully I can keep the momentum going and get some finished work done; yes though, on to the drawings!

Finished this image for my friends Drink and Draw get together (happening tonight actually); didn't come out exactly how I wanted it too but it was good practice. Much different sort of thing than I usually do, but I enjoyed it and hopefully I'll take another stab at it/make something along the same lines at some point. Sorry about the size of the image, forgot to size it down.

And these are some recent sketches, started off with some random faces then moved into environments. For some reason I've been obsessed with drawing rocks and rock formations lately (imagined ones I guess). Might be because of some sketches a friend from Conceptart.org (Emily Su) did recently, and a couple of them had these really nice pen sketches of rocks. Also I'm a huge fan of Tom Scholes work, and his environments are always amazing. So yea just drawing some environments, trying to play with foreground-middleground-background separation as well as line weight.

As has been my thing since school, I'm slowly giving my reel and animation abilities booster shots, hoping I can slowly move into the professional realm at some point (sooner rather than later preferably). Always loved Patri Balanovsky's (aka Chuck,mate) work so I thought I'd give an attempt at the way he does his sketches. I don't think I really matched his at all (his have much more life to em) but it was alot of fun regardless.

I've got a couple of walk cycles I did recently but I'm having more trouble than I should getting them into decent animated gif format. Sooo I'll just hold off on em until I have a couple more to put into a youtube video or something. These sketches are for a sort of poster thing I volunteered to do for my friend's Drink and Draw gatherings. I was thinking something along the lines of a quill/inkwell tap pouring ink into a beer mug that is atop a sketchbook. Oh and some bluish, smoky patterns going on in the top background. The color comp was mostly just me getting my initial ideas down, and the composition would probably have more open space surrounding the image, centering it. I'm slowly working it up, so I'll put progress shots up as I go.

Ugh, odd group of images this go around: got a more rendered doodle I did of the character design from below (just a portrait; gets progressively worse as you look at it from top to bottom, though it was fun practice), a wierd big-headed demon thing I doodled afterwards, and a, uh, bird sprite. I understand where the first two came from (the second started off as a potential baddy design for the helmet guy's short, no idea if I'll actually use it as one though), but I have no clue about the bird.

This guy is a character design I'm thinking of going with for a new short I'm gonna start soon. I was going to render him up a bit further but I kinda liked the simple colors under the lines; probably mess with a few more color palettes (especially thinking of how it'll work in his environment) but I'm pretty happy with this start. I also have another image of him with a texture from my pocket sketchbook that I'll probably overlay for the finished pieces. I kinda like the paper acting as his skin tone and as a unifying element for the overall colors... we'll see if it actually works in the end though.

Wee, almost another month down without a post. I HAVE been doing things... just been lazy with posting I guess. I'll probably try to put up a more as the days/week goes on, perhaps some figure drawings or more walk cycles or something.

Been reading through the Animator's Survival Kit again, and decided I should be doing at least one walk cycle/animation a day; figure it's good practice and if I'm doing it alot then I'll actually improve. So yep did a cycle yesterday and today. Also "finished" a stationary breathing cycle (I guess that's what it would be?) on a "sprite" I did in Flash (no idea if it's technically a sprite that way, but hey).

Fun trying to come up with unique walks... I apologize for the tearing on both of these, for some reason flash was showing a bunch of vector points when I had the color count a bit higher (lowered them to 4 colors each and it got rid of them, left the tearing though).

And this is the sprite I was workin on. For some reason I've had a tendency to draw variations of whales when I'm doodling; first one was a Whalespider, which I've yet to animate for some reason (probably because of 8 legs) and this one is an armored Land Whale. Still things I'd like to add, but this was a really fun experiment in using flash.

Hello, I'm back again with a few more doodles... I've yet to animate anything new (I started something but yeaaa, no idea if it'll actually become anything) but I have been drawing a lot more in flash. I'm starting to get more of a feel for the brush tool and drawing in it again... amazing what stepping away from drawing on the computer for a bit can do.

Been getting really frustrated with my drawing abilities lately... so I'm trying to find more of a solid style I enjoy and feel I could animate more easily in. I've also been trying to look at artists whom I would sort of like to draw like (which is never a bad thing to do); was thinking about Joshuathejames' work while I was drawing the fro guy (love his stuff).

Completely forgot that I had scanned these in; most of these are a couple weeks old at this point (at least one--the guy with the curvy arms pointing with one hand--is probably closer to 4 or 5 months old) but I like something in each of them at least a little bit.

All doodles really; since I suck at more finished drawings I was attempting some more finished things here and there.. probably not all that successful but hey baby steps right? hehe The last drawing was done in flash... haven't used the program for a while and after finally trying Castle Crashers (which was alot of fun) last week, I'd been itching to use flash again. I think he came out alright.. good practice anyway. Didn't animate the guy, though I'll probably take a stab at another character soonish... maybe something a bit more along the lines of a game sprite.

Hello everyone, how're things? I don't have a whole lot of things to show at the moment (at least from any larger work that I'm doing right now) but I figure that sketches are a good way to start off. I'm hoping this will be a way to benchmark my progress within my work(as well as encourage me to keep doing things). Also I'm open to any and all feedback on my work; happy just to meet people too!

These sketches are from semi recently (Monday the 30th I think) and they are of my friends in the animation department lounging around in the couch area outside of the lab. The first is more of a warm up page, though none of them are particularly good. Fun practice though; hopefully doing this m0re often will help with my line quality and confidence.
